Particle Identification Test Rig

This unit sucked in samples of air and extracted particles of around 10 microns using a virtual impactor. These particles are split into 10 streams and passed through a tube where the charge on the particle is measured the particle then passes through a laser beam and the resulting burst of light is captured at 6 positions around the axis of the particle, transfeered via a fibre optic connection to a photomultiplyer and the strength of the resulting light pulse measured to identify the material of the particle. This unit was a parallel program to the previous detector and was also designed to be modular and robust to enable field use.
